Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
